IVF – In Vitro Fertilization
IVF is the treatment for people who want to have children but cannot get pregnant for various reasons. Tube baby therapy has long been the hope for many families who want children. Nowadays, with the help of advanced technology and research, the success rate of IVF treatment has become quite high. Therefore, IVF treatment is one of the most frequently performed applications in the world.
What is IVF?
In vitro fertilization of the baby, sperm and ovary is injected into the uterus. IVF treatment is one of the most preferred applications for families who have no children for various reasons. Due to the obstruction of the ovarian canals, not merging the sperm and the eggs, stopping ovulation with age progression, ovarian cysts, hormonal problems and some genetic diseases will prevent women from becoming pregnant.
The number of sperms a woman needs to get pregnant is about 15 million. Sperm number less than 5 million or low sperm quality will prevent pregnancy. If the problem is due to the absence of sperm or the weakness of the existing sperm, the needle aspiration method is used. Sperm is taken from the male patient's testis with fine needle aspiration. The collected sperms are injected into the cells in the laboratory and after the uterus.
How is IVF Treatment?
IVF treatment is planned specifically for couples. In the first stage, gynecologic examination, PAP smear test and ultrasound examination are performed. In men, semen analysis and sperm count and quality are calculated. Then, on the 3rd day of menstrual period, various tests are performed and hormones are examined. As a result of all analyzes and investigations, a treatment plan is established and the process is started.
The second stage in IVF treatment is the stimulation of the ovaries. By increasing the level of estrogen in the blood, the egg diameter is expected to reach 16-20 mm. In order to determine the dose of the drug to be used, estrogen test should be performed on the 3rd day of menstruation. Once the drug is injected and the arousal has begun, the person is called regularly to check. By vaginal ultrasonography, the size of the egg follicles is checked. During these controls, the thickness of the endometrium layer in the uterus is also examined. In cases where endometrial thickness is less than 6 mm, drug treatment is started.
In the third stage, about 6000-8000 units of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) are injected to ensure final maturation. Injection of HCG drug together with cracking occurs. Egg collection is performed approximately 36 hours after cracking. As local anesthesia is applied during the egg collection process, no pain or pain is felt. The aspiration of the ovaries takes about 20-25 minutes.
Then the liquid collected during the egg collection process is prepared with special solutions in laboratory environment and prepared for fertilization. In the meantime, the same process is carried out for sperm from men. Sperm is purified from foreign proteins and prepared for fertilization. Approximately 20,000 sperms are used to fertilize each egg cell. It takes about 15-20 hours to fertilize the eggs. If the egg is fertilized, the number of cells has increased to two. Quality embryos are transferred to the uterus by taking the determined number.
In the final stage, both urine and blood are tested. If the result of the pregnancy test is positive, it is repeated after 3 days and the results are compared. If the pregnancy is healthy, the blood beta-HCG value will be doubled. Two weeks after the procedure, uterine ultrasound is performed to see how many gestational sacs are performed. The rate of giving birth to twins and triplets is very high. However, the number of fetuses in pregnancy may decrease. In this way, the remaining ratio of the remaining fetus is increased.
